What if you can't afford a lawyer to represent you in court? The U.S. recognizes how important it is to have legal counsel if you are accused of a crime, so a second right is attached to your right to counsel. If you can't afford a lawyer, a lawyer is appointed to you, and he or she is paid by the government.
